Is Kitchen Cabinet Refacing for You?

Let’s just face it; everyone’s not cut out for around-the-house duties, especially if they require a bit more grunt work than the usual weed-pulling activities. So if you’ve been approached with a kitchen cabinet refacing project, it’s a good idea to first determine if it’s a good idea for you. You don’t want to find yourself on a reality TV pilot, “When Kitchen Cabinet Refacing Goes Wrong,” do you?

Do You Dislike Getting Your Hands Dirty?

If you don’t like getting your hands dirty then kitchen cabinet refacing probably isn’t for you. Why, you ask? Well, one of the first steps in refacing your cabinets is cleaning all of the dirt and grease off of them. Of course, you can wear rubber gloves, protective eyewear and throw-away clothes to do this part, so keep this in mind as you decide.

Are You No Good with Tools?

Before you even begin cleaning the cabinets, many experts recommend that you remove at least the doors from the walls. Also, you will need to be able to use screwdrivers and other tools like sanders to strip them. If you don’t feel comfortable using these tools then refacing cabinets may not be for you.

Do You Feel Comfortable Staining or Painting?

Some people do not feel comfortable with the idea of staining or painting anything. They may feel that they don’t have a steady enough hand to get it done correctly, or just don’t like the idea of getting all messy. If you fall into this category then you may want to stay away from kitchen cabinet refacing.

Refacing your cabinets is something you could do you if you have basic hardware skills and feel comfortable enough getting messy and working with tools and paint. But if this is not you then the taking apart, cleaning, stripping refinishing and putting back together of the kitchen cabinets may be more project than you want to take on.
