Choosing Your Kitchen Cabinets

If you’ve ever remodeled your kitchen, you know that it can be extremely difficult to choose the type of kitchen cabinets you want. Whether you’re trying to decide between wood and stainless steel, natural wood and paint, or even stock vs. a custom build, you have a lot to think about for sure.

So how in the world can you make these challenging decisions when there are so many options sitting in front of you? There are a few ways to help you narrow down your options.

Your Budget

One of the first items you’ll probably want to consider when thinking about the kitchen cabinets you want to purchase is your budget. Depending on how much money you have to spend, you may only be restricted to certain types of cabinets. One of the best ways to determine how much you should spend on your cabinets is to think in terms of how much you want to spend on your kitchen as a whole. Whatever your budget is for the entire kitchen, split that number in half – this is the amount you have to pay for your cabinets.

While it may sound like a bit much, this is a pretty realistic figure. After you’ve decided what this amount is, you can start making choices on what you can afford in style, wood, etc.

The Type of Construction You Want

The next item on your list should be choosing the type of construction you want. The good news, however, is that there are only three types of construction to consider for kitchen cabinets: stock, semi custom, and custom made. Of course, stock is the cheapest and is found in your local home improvement store all ready to go. If you want to upgrade some, you can go with the semi-custom cabinet, which is manufactured after you place an order with your cabinet supplier. They’re considered semi-custom because they allow you to have more say in how they’re designed. Finally, if you want complete control, you can go with the custom-made cabinet, which are the most expensive.

Style and Material

Next on your list is both style and material. Choosing the style you want to go with can be done through visiting your home improvement store, looking through kitchen magazines, or working with an interior decorator/designer. When it comes to materials, you want to choose between wood, metal, or a laminate. If you choose wood, there is almost too much to choose from, but some options might include birch, ebony, hickory, pine or oak. If you go with metal (stainless steel), you’ll pay more, but it’s more durable and easier to clean. If you go with a laminate, you’ll pay less, but they damage easily.

Your last concern is choosing a finish, which may be a color or varnish. After you’ve made all of your decisions, you’ve completed this fabulous aspect of your kitchen. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to start making some important decision regarding the future of your kitchen cabinets.
